XXL Advent Wreath
DO IT YOURSELF
The Advent season is full of little wonders – lights, scents and warm moments. And what could suit this atmosphere better than an Advent wreath that not only looks beautiful, but is also a joy to craft? An Advent wreath is more than just decoration. It accompanies us through December with a festive glow and heightens the anticipation of Christmas. With felt, paint, and sparkling decorations, simple straw wreaths can be transformed into a festive work of art.
Below, you will find an easy-to-follow, detailed guide with valuable tips and tricks for creating your perfect Advent wreath.

Instructions: Crafting the Advent Wreath
Step 1: Stacking and Securing the Straw Wreaths
Start by building the basic structure of the wreath. Place three straw wreath rings of identical size on top of each other to form a sturdy stack. Secure the rings with florist wire. Wrap the wire fully around the stack once and tie the end tightly. Any excess wire can be cut off and pushed into the straw.
Step 2: Increasing the Volume
If you prefer a slightly fuller look, you can enlarge the volume of the wreath by adding extra paper. Tear newspaper or packing paper into strips or loose bundles. Place the paper lengthwise around the outside of the stacked wreaths and secure it with strawflower pins.
Step 3: Covering with Felt Ribbon
To give the wreath an attractive base layer, I recommend using a wide felt ribbon for the covering. Secure the ribbon with strawflower pins and then wrap it around the entire wreath in a spiral. Pass through the centre of the wreath repeatedly and place the layers slightly overlapping as you wrap them around the straw rings. You should fix the ribbon with pins at intervals as you work.
Step 4: Positioning the Candles
To ensure the candles are placed evenly, two candles should always be positioned directly opposite each other. Insert the candle holders into the straw wreath rings to secure them. If necessary, you can additionally fix the candle holders with a small amount of hot glue. Make sure the candles stand upright and are firmly in place.
- ⚠️ Safety note: A heat-resistant candle plate must be used between the base of the candle and the felt.
Step 5: Decorating with the Hot Glue Gun
Now we come to the star of this project! The cordless hot glue gun is not only practical but absolutely essential here. It ensures that felt, baubles and all other decorative elements stay exactly where they should.
Start by attaching the larger decorative pieces such as twigs, small trees and bigger baubles. Use the hot glue gun to fix them evenly around the entire wreath. Work your way around the wreath to maintain a symmetrical appearance.
A rotating wooden turntable is perfect for this! Gradually add smaller baubles, twigs and various decorative elements to give the wreath a beautifully full look.
- 💡 Tip: Work quickly but neatly – hot glue dries very fast.
Step 6: Final Touches & Check
Check all decorative elements to ensure they are firmly attached, and make sure you have not placed anything too close to the candles. Place the wreath on a stable, fireproof surface. Never leave burning candles unattended and keep fire-extinguishing materials nearby. While the candles are burning, regularly check whether they are burning evenly and correctly, and reposition them if necessary.
- 💡 Tip: For increased safety, LED candles can also be used.
Conclusion: Large Advent Wreath for a Festive Atmosphere
An Advent wreath brings a sense of peaceful Christmas spirit into your home. The combination of height, felt covering and carefully arranged decorations makes it unique and reveals how much personality goes into handmade projects. In the end, you are not simply holding an Advent wreath in your hands, but a piece of Christmas joy that makes the Advent season a little more special each year.
Have fun crafting, and Merry Christmas!
